If the ideal wardrobe had a centerpiece, it would probably be the white shirt. Wear it with jeans or an evening skirt, under a sweater or under a blazer, tucked in, tied, or worn wide open. It brightens your face, goes with every color, and outlasts trends without dating.
Still, many white shirts stay in the closet because they pull at the buttons, are too sheer, or leave you unsure how to wear them beyond the office. Here’s how to choose the right one, plus ideas for wearing it all year long.
Choosing the right white shirt
The fit
Oversized : slightly dropped shoulders, with a length that covers the hips. Relaxed and modern, wear it open, tied, or half-tucked. Straight : neither loose nor fitted, it’s the most versatile. Fitted : fitted at the waist and more classic, tuck it into high-waisted pants or a skirt.
The fabric
The cotton poplin is crisp and structured, ideal for the office. oxford, which is thicker, is relaxed and opaque. linen is perfect for summer, with its lovely natural creases. silk or satin add an evening-ready feel. Check how sheer it is in daylight—that’s often where a shirt falls short. It’s the surest shirt for a job interview outfit.
The right fit
No button should pull across the chest. Shoulder seams should sit at the edge of your shoulders (or slightly beyond for an oversized fit). Raise your arms: the shirt shouldn’t suddenly come untucked.

Ways to wear it
Half-tucked (the “French tuck”): tuck just the front into your waistband and let the rest fall loose. The effect is relaxed and gently defines your waist. It’s one of the key styling tricks for a casual chic.
Tied : over a midi skirt or high-waisted pants, with the front ends tied together.
Open : like a light jacket over a T-shirt or tank top, with the sleeves rolled up.
Under a sweater : let the collar and cuffs peek out from a crewneck sweater. A polished look for fall.
As a dress : a long oversized shirt, belted and worn on its own with sandals or boots.

A few styling tricks turn a simple shirt into a thoughtfully put-together look. Rolling up the sleeves two or three turns, just below the elbow, makes the shirt feel more relaxed and frees your wrists for a bracelet. Undoing one more button for an evening out opens up the neckline and shows off a delicate necklace. Popping the collar under a coat or jacket adds character. Adding a belt worn over flowing pants, a long shirt defines your silhouette. Finally, gold jewelry warm up white, while silver gives it a cooler, more graphic shine.
White shirts and colors
White goes with everything, but some combinations work especially well: with Navy for a classic nautical look (see what to wear with navy blue), with camel for a soft look, with black for a graphic contrast, with pastels for a fresh feel, or with a bold color (red, green) to make it pop.

Caring for your white shirt
Sort the shirt appropriately and follow its own care instructions. A silk shirt, poplin shirt and structured design may not allow the same temperature or drying method. For collars and cuffs, choose a compatible pretreatment after a discreet test; a baking-soda soak is not a universal remedy. Our guide to removing a clothing stain starts with these checks.

Frequently asked questions
Which white shirt should you choose if you have a fuller bust?
A straight or slightly oversized fit in soft cotton, with buttons placed close together. Avoid very fitted styles that make the buttons gape.
How can you keep your shirt from coming untucked?
Choose a long enough shirt and high-waisted pants, or try a French tuck for a relaxed look.
Does a white shirt suit every skin tone?
Bright whites suit high-contrast complexions; off-white and ivory are softer on fair or warm complexions.
