Set my budget and purchases

An example available without JavaScript

With an €80 starting balance and €50 set aside monthly, October has €130 available. A €180 coat and a committed €25 alteration leave −€75. Yet the example’s four rows total €330 and annual funding reaches €680, so the closing balance is positive at €350.

A plan you can adjust

  1. Choose an amount and period, then enter the balance already available. The plan covers twelve months from your chosen start.
  2. Add each purchase with its full cost, month and status. Alterations or care can have their own rows. Categories are editable.
  3. Compare scenarios, review negative months and purchases left outside the plan. Download JSON to resume your work, or CSV for your own spreadsheet.

Example: buying a coat too early

With an €80 starting balance and €50 set aside monthly, October has €130 available. A €180 coat and a committed €25 alteration leave −€75. Yet the example’s four rows total €330 and annual funding reaches €680, so the closing balance is positive at €350.

In the delay scenario, the coat moves to December and the €90 shoes to February. The alteration stays in October. Removing only the optional €35 top leaves €385 at the end, but does not by itself fix October’s shortfall. These are three views of the same budget, not three ratings of a purchase.

Method and sources

Closing monthly balance = opening balance + monthly contribution − committed spending − included planned purchases.

Calculations use whole cents. An annual budget is divided into twelve contributions; leftover cents go to the first months. A quarterly budget is multiplied by four and spread the same way. Contributions are assumed available at the start of each month: exact income and payment dates are not modeled.

Delays are processed by priority, then preferred month, then row order. For each flexible purchase, the algorithm finds the first month on or after the requested date where that purchase leaves all remaining balances nonnegative, accounting for commitments and purchases already scheduled. Category limits are not used in this search. This deterministic choice does not optimize every possible combination.

The alert threshold is zero: a lower balance means spending exceeds the cumulative funding entered. A purchase left outside the twelve months is neither canceled nor funded. A shortfall caused by committed payments alone remains visible. Prices, balances, dates and priorities are your assumptions; no income or garment-lifespan scale is added.

References consulted October 17, 2026: the French National Consumer Institute explains fixed and variable spending and timing gaps between money in and out. The Mes questions d’argent budget calendar supports planning across the year. These resources inform budget organization; the three scenarios above are specific to this tool.

What the numbers do not decide

The plan does not assess your overall finances or a garment’s quality or usefulness. It does not encourage borrowing to cover a negative month. Unentered expenses, price changes and refunds are not anticipated. You can adjust an amount after a refund or exclude a row, then recalculate. One currency is used, without conversion or inflation.

The workshop accepts 60 purchases and 12 categories. Keep labels generic: no identity, banking data or account connection is needed. JSON stores the list and settings; closing the page without saving it loses your changes. Exports require no link to Vestly.

Prepare decisions before shopping

The calendar complements a review of clothes already available. These guides help you consider use, secondhand options and whether another item is useful.

Practical questions

What clothing budget should I choose?

The tool recommends no amount or income percentage. You choose an available allowance after considering other expenses. The starting balance only represents money already assigned to this plan.

Why is a month negative when the year ends positive?

Purchases may occur before the contributions that fund them. The monthly view preserves this timing gap; it does not automatically spread a coat’s cost across the year.

Does delaying purchases guarantee funding for all of them?

No. The scenario keeps committed payments and looks for fundable dates for flexible rows. Purchases without a suitable date remain explicitly outside the twelve months. Shortfalls caused by commitments alone remain visible.

Do category allowances limit purchases?

No. They compare committed and planned spending with your own reference points. Delays use only the overall balance. A blank category limit means no cap; zero is an explicit limit.

Are my purchases stored or transmitted?

This tool’s inputs, calculations and exports stay in your browser. Nothing is saved automatically. You choose whether to download and reopen the JSON project or keep the CSV files.

Are the tool and exports free?

Yes, with no account or email required. The Vestly app has separate terms and pricing. Print / PDF uses your browser’s printing and the scenario currently displayed.
