To fasten a two-way coat zipper, bring both sliders to the bottom and fully insert the separating pin before moving the upper slider. Keep the fabric steady and pull gently in line with the zipper. If it does not engage, return to the starting position instead of forcing it shut.
Is your zipper actually separating?
This guide covers a coat whose two sides separate completely at the bottom. A bag zipper with two pulls that meet in the middle can work differently. YKK distinguishes separating from nonseparating zippers: counting sliders alone does not identify the correct action.
Check your model’s instructions if its construction differs. The pull tab is the small part you hold; the slider is the part that guides the teeth. A damaged pull tab and a broken bottom box need different repairs.
How do you engage both sliders?
Lay out or hold the coat without tension, keeping the lining clear. Bring both sliders all the way to the bottom and check that they are together. Hold the fabric to keep this base straight, as Didriksons explains in its guide.
Then insert the separating pin fully through both sliders. Check that it is seated before pulling: incomplete insertion can make the bottom look connected when it is not. Gently move the upper slider upward, in line with the zipper.

Check the order before pulling

What is the bottom opening for?
On a zipper designed for it, the lower slider opens part of the bottom while the top stays closed. Didriksons describes this as a way to make more room for the legs, including when seated. It does not turn every coat into suitable cycling or activity clothing.
Try the movement without stretching the fabric. Before separating the two sides completely, bring both sliders back together at the bottom as the instructions specify. Do not try to pass one slider through the other.

Stop pulling and look for the obstruction. Lining caught in the path, an incompletely seated pin, and a damaged tooth need different responses. If fabric is trapped and will not release gently, seek advice rather than pulling harder.
| Clue | Next step |
|---|---|
| Pin not fully seated | Return to the start and check insertion |
| Lining caught in the path | Release tension and inspect without tearing |
| Missing tooth or torn tape | Have the zipper inspected |
| Only the pull tab is damaged | Describe that part to the repairer |

Should you lubricate or squeeze the slider?
Do not add oil or squeeze the slider to compensate for incomplete engagement. A product can stain the garment, and pliers can distort the metal. Follow only the care instructions for the zipper and coat.
Prepare a photo of the base and the fault to organize a repair. Our guide to coat care between cleanings distinguishes maintenance from work on the zipper. Our garment construction guide explains what you can inspect without unpicking seams.

FAQ
Do two pulls always mean a bottom opening?
Bag and coat constructions can differ. Identify a separating zipper and check the model’s instructions before using this method.
Why bring the sliders together?
On this construction, it allows full insertion of the separating pin. A slider left higher up can prevent proper engagement.
Should the lower slider move up first?
To fasten this construction, seat the base and move the upper slider. The lower one can then adjust the bottom opening if the design allows it.
How do you separate the coat completely?
Bring both sliders together at the bottom as instructed before withdrawing the separating side. Do not force a part that is stuck.
Is wax required?
Lubricant does not replace correct engagement. Use only a product explicitly compatible with the zipper and fabric when the instructions call for it.
Does a broken pull tab mean discarding the coat?
The damage may involve one small part or the whole assembly. Have it identified before deciding what needs replacing.
